Rob Schwimmer (USA)

Don't plan on going too far too fast. It's a real instrument and it takes time to play beautifully and in tune... a lot of time. You have to really want it

Lawrence Kaster (USA)

I agree with Clara Rockmore and those who quote her. It is better to learn music on some other instrument first, because the theremin will let you do anything at all. It's a lot like clay, a medium that has no apparent internal structure to help discipline you. You have to already have a musical discipline or you will just make mudpies. Any keyboard instrument is good, because all you have to do is press the keys. After that, knowing musical notation is certainly a great crutch. You can follow along and make convincing notes and rhythm structures. But more than that, you have to have music in you, music that _has_ to come out. If your are not driven to make music, it will just be tedious. If you are like Django Rinehart, losing two fingers and being left with damaged thumb, index and ring finger, nothing can stop you from making your music. It will be brilliant.

Learn everything then forget it! Listen to yourself through the sounds of the Theremin.

A solid music background is a must. Learn how to read and write music. Ear-training is absolutely necessary. Take time to explore the sonic possibilities. Take time to create your own method and style but study the masters. It might take many years before you feel comfortable enough to improvise with it, but when you do, remember to learn how to play expressively; meaning phrasing and technique come together to create a musical performance.

That's an easy question! If one is serious about picking up the Theremin, he or she should get professional help: find a violin, viola or cello teacher who wants to give you lessons. He or she can learn you a lot about tuning, making your way from one note to the other, vibrato, expression, music theory, note reading etc. I myself am being coached by Saskia Boon, a cellist of the Dutch Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra which impoved my playing by a milestone. The Theremin is a very difficult instrument and deserves to be taken seriously, so if you start, take lessons!!! Just like anybody else does when they start playing the Clarinet, Piano, Drums etc ....

Reject the notion, still perpetuated today, that the theremin is the most
difficult instrument in the world to play. Every instrument ever invented
is difficult at first. Practice. Practice a lot. Watch every theremin
player you can. Listen to every theremin player that you can. Try every
type of music and sound until you find what moves you the most. Practice.
Practice a lot. Look at everyone’s techniques and find what works for you.
And practice.

The second piece of advice I give, is that the theremin should be treated with respect: it's an instrument that can arrive to express itself musically as any other instrument in an orchestra, it's not a toy, thus it should be studied with seriousness and discipline. The third piece of advice is to start to look for a good theremin teacher, Due to that learning alone could drag many mechanic problems. I know that why I say is not easy to follow but it should be. If the beginner is already a musician it'll always be better to begin from zero.

For people just starting on the theremin, I recommend the Burns or Moog theremins, along with my DVD, Peter Pringle's DVD, Carolina Eyck's book, as well as the free downloadable books by Victor Estrada, as well as Clara Rockmore's booklet, both of which are downloadable PDF files. The web site, thereminworld is a great place for new thereminists to start their electronic journey with the theremin. I hope the above ansers will help you, and others who read it.

What you can recommend for beginners thereminists, or those who are just going to start their way of thereminist? It requires complete devotion to play properly, like a religion. Practice practice practice.
